This 90-minute Workshop will be radically practical! You will be introduced to Sense Writing, and through demonstration and practice, you’ll learn how this transformational writing habit will help you:

  • Write on any day, regardless of your mood or level of inspiration
  • Write as a process of discovering what themes, topics, ideas, and concepts connect with you as a songwriter
  • Generate vivid, compelling, and unique lyric material for song ideas you already have going
  • Discover your unique voice as a songwriter

The Workshop will involve lots of writing, as well as critical listening to songs from diverse genres and eras. There will be a chance to share your writing, receive some feedback, with a 20-minute Q&A at the end.

  • Songwriters of any level looking to improve their lyric writing abilities
  • Creative writers who have experienced writers block, and are looking for a way out!
  • Music teachers (secondary and tertiary) looking for techniques and methods for helping their students interested in contemporary songwriting practices.

Your Teacher

Keppie Coutts is a working professional songwriter, and teaches contemporary songwriting in some of the world’s most renowned colleges and universities. She is also the co-founder of the popular ‘How to Write Songs’ YouTube Channel, with a hell-bent mission to help people become better songwriters.

Keppie has taught songwriting at the Berklee College of Music, for Berklee Online, the Australian College of the Arts (Collarts), the Open Academy at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, The Australian Institute of Music, the JMC Academy, as well as at the Songwriting School of Los Angeles.

As working songwriters, Keppie has written and co-written songs that have had over 10 million streams in the past 2 years with bands and artists as diverse as ARIA-nominated Twelve Foot Ninja (heavy metal) and Universal Music songwriter Skye. Keppie’s songs appear in major network television shows, and most recently, Keppie was commissioned by Penguin Random House to write one of the first full albums of original work to appear in a major audiobook release (Mothertongues, 2022)—many of the songs were co-written with the authors.

Keppie’s “voice is beautiful, just gorgeous. She’s like a contemporary female Nick Drake…and her guitar playing is so beautiful, so raw…” —John Mayer

“Coutts’ songs marry soul and folk so gorgeously, you’ll cheer when they get stuck on endless repeat on the jukebox in your brain.” —The Boston Globe

Keppie’s music is here.
