Songwriting Workshop | Guitar Techniques for Songwriters

Overview

Finger-style patterns, rhythms, groove, and chord approaches to elevate your songwriting and performance of your songs for guitar-players.

It’s easy to fall into the same strumming patterns and habits when writing and performing on the guitar. This 90-minute workshops will explore practical techniques, approaches and methods for varying up your approach to playing the guitar, when both writing your songs, and performing them live.

We’ll look at:

• different dynamic techniques
• a variety of finger-picking patterns that you can apply to virtually any song
• inversions and voicings of chords that can add variety to basic chord progressions
• the “lead finger principle” in creating interesting transitions between chords
• using space as a composition tool

By the end of 90 minutes, you’ll have:

• a toolset of new picking patterns
• new rhythmic approaches
• new ways to play familiar chords
• an understanding of the principles underlying the approaches to creating interesting variations on the guitar

Who is this Workshop for?

This workshop is for songwriters who write and/or perform original songs primarily on the guitar, and are looking for new ways to freshen up their approach to writing and performing.

There is an assumed knowledge of basic music theory, and an ability to play open and closed position chords on the guitar. Please email us if you have any questions, or want to know if it’s a right fit for you!

Meet your Teacher

This workshop will be presented by Ben Romalis.

Ben’s passion for music and creativity stretches across multiple disciplines and art-forms. He is a founding member and songwriter / lap-slide guitarist for one of Australia’s best and most bearded country-bluegrass-folk bands, THE GREEN MOHAIR SUITS. To date the Mohairs have released 4 full-length albums and tour both nationally and overseas.

Ben is also the Founder and Head Producer of SILAMOR STUDIOS, a boutique studio specialising in Composition for Film, TV and Interactive Media. He writes extensively across various instrumental and lyric-based genres and has been commissioned for major projects by Adobe, Cathay Pacific and Audible. He also currently releases original songs under the name SILAMOR.

Ben is passionate about education and has taught song and lyric writing as well as film composition for JMC Academy and the Australian Institute of Music. He also designs and regularly facilitates workshops on creative process and innovation.
